Let me paint you a picture, Recently I started reading The Silence Of The Lambs books, In English (of course, I wish my German was at a level where I could read complex crime thrillers but it's not sadly.) I had steamed through the copies of Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs that my sister had so kindly lent me, but I was stuck, this void in the center of my chest for more guts and gore was aching for the final book... Hannibal.
I was walking around Prenzlauerberg, scanning the streets as I usually do, when I saw "Hannibal" the book, in English, I stopped in my steps, then ran to the book, looked at the price... "€3". I screamed like a 5 year old girl in the middle of the street (much to my boyfriends dismay and uncomfort.) I ran inside the quaint little shop and immediately said to the lady at the counter "THANK YOU!" and explained my addiction to the writer... But what has this got to do with anything?
Well the shop I was at was none other than "Shakespeare and Sons", A book shop supplying English and French books of all genres and styles with a cosy feel to it.
I walked around the shop after my purchase and looked at the various books they have for sale and I can safely say that if you are anything like me (a bit of a book worm) then this place is a Mecca, with latest releases and also classics, I asked if she had a book that I had seen/heard about and she said no... but she was going to get it in because it sounded good.
This place gets a 10/10 for customer service, 10/10 for stock (unlike places like Thalia in the Alexa shopping complex which assumes all british people want to read German history books and Z list Celebrity biographies) and a 10/10 for price, They sell used (but in mint condition) books for around 2-4 euros a pop and any brand new books are reasonably priced.
Shakespeare and Sons has a website with free shipping at www.shakes.cz
Alternatively you can visit their store at Raumerstrasse 36, Prenzlauerberg.
