Being a huge film fan it is criminal that it took me so long to sample the simple delights of cinema outdoors (one year). After I did though, it was making up for lost time. There are loads of cinemas that serve the outdoor enthusiast. I've counted 8 so far. Each one has its own identity and atmosphere. I've chosen my top 3 to list below, offering all the information you will need for cinema under the stars whilst watching them on the big screen! The one in Kreuzberg close to U -Bahn station Kottbusser says its the oldest, it's also my local so I'll start with this one.
Kreuzberg:
The
outdoor cinema is found in Mariannenplatz 1 , 10997 Berlin. There are chairs to sit on, the comfier ones being at the front. It's pretty popular so get there early to avoid the massive queues, having said that the queue goes down fast so don't panic if you're never on time for anything. This was my first outdoor cinema experience, I watched The Fantastic Mr Fox and it was brilliant. The program includes anything from classics to cults to the latest block busters and a wide variety of world cinema. Films are usually shown in their original language with German subtitles, so not much of that monstrous dubbing to endure! Snacks on offer. Prices around 5 to 8 Euro.

Friedrichshain Open Air Cinema:
This is one of the most popular outdoor kinos in Berlin because it caters for everybody; men, women, kids, push chairs, wheel chairs, pets! It seats 300, mostly sitting on large benches but there are also tables and chairs. There's a good selection of fast food to choose from like hot dogs or that old cinema favourite, popcorn (of course, it would be sacrilege not to have popcorn at the cinema), hot and cold drinks are on offer too so you can guzzle that popcorn to the tune of a nice cold one. The films run continuously without a break, in my experience, and there's also a good mix of cults, classics, world and big hitters. They also show short films, in the interest of supporting the budding talent and these are often introduced by the directors themselves. Prices 6.50 Euros or if you find you go a lot then get a five card for 27.50 Euros.

Hasenheide, Neukölln:
This cinema under the open sky is open every Thursday from June to September, no matter, (they say,) what the weather brings. This cinema has a reputation for its arts and cult films but again, like the others, you'll find a range from vintage classic to modern day screened every week. There's a good seating area, consisting mostly of wide benches and snacks on offer (the usual suspects). The crowd here are usually quite young so if you're what they call 'youth' and you're single, opportunities may present themselves at this great, chilled out cinematic event. There'll be plenty to chat about. Films are often dubbed so it's better to ring up and check if you, like me, consider this a blasphemous process!
