In this highly competitive day and age, dipping your finger into just one isolated pie of the creative industry is rarely enough to hit satisfyingly high peaks of success (unless you happen to fall into bed with Miss Lady Luck). Each finger as deep in as many artsy pies as possible is now generally the accepted method of approach. A notion which isn't nearly as crude as I just made it sound, and one that Berlin hair stylist / painter / electronic music producer and owner of Tunnel Hair Studio, Viktor Leske, is clearly well aware of.
The point isn't just to plunge greedily into each slice of creativity simply for the sake of it, consequently making a big, tasteless mess of it all. It should be a passionate and delicate exploration of intersections, interconnections, collaborations and amalgamation (all of those broad but important terms which are thrown at you time and time again by stern-faced university lecturers in any creative industry course).
Viktor's own passionate exploration of a multitude of sectors of the creative industry is one that shows tremendously when you visit Tunnel Hair. Upon entering the Kreuzberg salon, your eyes are instantly accosted by the brazenly sharp, modern design of Thomas Karsten and Alexandra Erhard, the architect duo also responsible for the brilliant conception of the Berghain and Panorama Bar layout, which together equal possibly the best clubbing experience currently available in the world. The intersections and interconnections of art and design begin when you walk through the door of Viktor's enterprise, and continue throughout your entire experience within its walls. With a little luck, the talented Frenchman, who trained at one of Paris' top hairstylists for years before relocating to Techno City, may utilise the impeccable sound system to dazzle you with a few of his own tight productions released on Neverending Records.
Or perhaps, as you marvel at the result of your new look unfolding before your eyes in the mirror, you may simultaneously admire Viktor's boldly colourful artwork, hanging in stark contrast against the clean walls. Whatever the outcome, you get the chance to contemplate all of these artful connections and be inspired by the very art of design itself, as he moves around you with nimble finesse and applies his many years of experience and his obscure cutting technique to fashion you a new style that is every bit as sharp and avant-garde as the design of the space that surrounds you.
