10 Fantastic Cafès in Mitte
Written by Liz McGrath
BangBangBerlin

You have more cafès in Mitte than you can shake a stick at, but some really are a cut above the rest. You just need to know where to go! Here we highlight those that not only serve great coffee but great food too and are perfect places for whiling away a couple of hours, meeting friends and watching the world go by. These places are also especially good for soothing a sore head that's possibly sampled too much of Berlin's legendary club scene the night before.....so put your sunglasses on and order that coffee.

1. Rèe Kaffee

Flick through fashion magazines and sip gorgeous cappucino in this sprawling bijoux coffee joint - which is very centrally located right by Rosenthaler Platz. They also have a smoking room for those who need a nicotine hit along with their caffeine.

Brunnen Strasse 5
10119 Berlin

2. Lux 11

The Weinmeister's sister hotel is actually the far better place to chill for a coffee in and in the summer its esepcially nice to sit on their street-level patio - in winter the newly opened 'lodge' is great for cosy coffees (or a sneaky glass of champagne if you need it).

3. Cafe Fluery

Cute, comfy and ultra-chic, Fleury is an institution for caffine junkies who enjoy posing while drinking. They serve some great French food here too - the goats cheese and olive baguettes are delicious, the home-made chocolate cake is wicked and the mixed breakfast plate is always a winner.

4. Il Syndicato

This small and charming cafe serves killer Latte Machiato coffees but they also have a secret culinary weapon up their sleeves - they serve daily fresh sandwiches caled 'Piadina ' - a traditional Italien thin flat bread that is filled with your choice of filling - the bresaola mascarpone, tomatoe + rucola is our personal fave and a taste sensation! The large window seat box is the best place to nab.

5. Cafe Oliv

Hip and relaxed coffee hangout also has handy window seats which are perfect for a view of the passing mitte fashion-traffic.

6. Nola's AM Weinberg

Enjoy the beautiful view over Weinbergs Park while you sip your first skinny latte! Nola's is a hugely-popular cafe/restuarant focused on Swiss food (they do to-die for cheese fondue and chocoolate deserts) - in the summer the terrace is a lways chockablock and you can easily pass an afternoon in the sunshine there, probably moving accidentally swiftly on from coffee to weiß bier / prosecco auf ice.

7. Cafe 103

103 is a Mitte classic. Situated on a busy corner on the so-called 'Casting Allee' because of all the beuaitful people around, it's right by the beautiful Zion Kirche and is truly is a great spot in which to park your ass and watch the world go by. They have a fantastic Asian lunch menu (chicken satay, thai curry etc) and their breakfasts are rather legendary too. Get their breakast for 2 if you are on a date, it's an impressive combo of meats, cheeses, eggs, fruit and yogurt.

8. Barcomi's Deli

HIdden in a beautiful courtyard between Sophien and Gips Straße, this cafe is a real gem. The courtyard alone is a sight to see as both walls are still riddled with bullet holes, a poignant reminder of the War. The booths inside give this cafe a 50's American diner feeling, they certainly serve the best New York cheesecake in Berlin here and their Bagels with cream cheese and salmon are also to die for. The coffee is of course also superb. Highly recommended!

9. Luigi Zuckermann Deli

This new Italien deli won't disappoint - it's produce is fresh every day and mouth-wateringly good. The coffee is really good plus they do enormous salads and sandwiches that are really worth the slightly higher price-tag. It's also one of Berlin's very few high-class 24 hours cafes! (One for the night owls out there!)

10. Keyser Soze

Named after Kevin Spacey's villain in The Usual Suspects, this cafe has been serving coffee on this corner of Tucholsky and August Straße for over 10 years now. Breakfasts are always great here and it's the perfect place to while away a few hours reading the papers.
