A short film is like a poem. Concise and punctual, it makes its point without stretching itself out of shape. Maintaining its story, the drama portrayed is intense, bite-sized, and meticulously edited. A short film is like a momentary glance, a few minutes of thought, upon a strange and foreign subject that flashes itself upon the screen, revealing, teasing, and fulfilling the viewer.
In a world in which we constantly need things faster, smaller, and ‘newer’, it comes as no surprise that short films have become worthy of the same attention and accolades as its big brother, the Feature Film. Garnering big name stars and even its own Academy Award category, the short film has come a long way since its twinned birth alongside the heavyweight feature.

In Berlin over the past couple of years, short film festivals have taken the city by storm. Boasting some form of short film festival almost every other month of the year, Berlin’s cinematic audience has certainly developed a fine taste for this fine, foxy film medium. Having presented the hugely popular Future Shorts Film Festival throughout the year, the Berlin Film Society has now set its sights on curating its own programme of critically-acclaimed shorts, chosen from the shortlisted entries of one of the UK’s most exciting short film festivals, The Smalls Festival.

On Thursday 11th October, the Berlin Film Society will present 11 international short films, many of which have already won awards on the festival circuit, at The Wye in Kreuzberg. Combining a diverse mix of genre and style, from comedy to drama, documentary to music video, this special, one-off screening will celebrate the ever-growing, yet forever short, world of this versatile and prolific medium. Following the film screening, there will be a Q&A with the Managing Director of The Smalls, Kate Tancred.
