Christa Joo Hyun D'Angelo is a Korean-Italian American artist who has been based in Berlin for four and a half years. Having already been an expat, she made the leap from New York to Poland where she studied poster art and then landed happily in Berlin. She started delving into the world of collage/paper deconstructions just two years ago. Her interests lie in pop culture and cinema as she is trying to find ways to digest and regurgitate the information we are fed through the entertainment industry.
Her visual experience since moving to Berlin has grown exponentially based on her daily personal interactions and observations. The work she makes for both collage and book deconstruction, utilizes various sources including magazine and books. While most have been found on the street, others have been purchased solely to be lovingly mutilated. Her art space in the Neukölln neighborhood of Berlin is strewn with colorful paper scraps, inspirational images and some a few proof tests that are waiting to be decided upon and officially printed. A recent discovery and inspiration is the collage and installations of New York based German artist Josephine Meckseper. I personally love knowing who an artist is looking at and wasn't surprised after meeting Christa, to discover she had done her homework.
Currently she has an exhibition that will open in Berlin at the Galerie Suvi Lehtinen on September 2nd, 2011 along with another solo show that will be at an new gallery in New York called Arts, Sciences and Projects, forthcoming. Stay tuned!
